WASHINGTON, January 5 APIs Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System (EOLCS) has introduced a new passenger car gasoline engine oil service category, API Service SM, which became available for API Service Symbol Donut licensing as of November 30, 2004.
Engine oils meeting the new API SM service category designation are designed to provide improved oxidation resistance and deposit protection, better wear protection, and better low-temperature performance over the life of the oil. Oils meeting this new standard have already begun to appear in the marketplace.
Some SM oils may also meet the latest International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) GF-4 specification, its latest minimum performance standard for gasoline-fueled passenger car engine oils. SM oils may also qualify as having Energy Conserving properties.
For automotive gasoline engines, this latest engine oil service category includes the performance properties of each earlier category.
"If an automotive owners manual calls for an API SJ or SL oil, an API SM oil will provide full engine protection."
Motorists can easily identify oils meeting the latest automobile manufacturers recommendations by looking for oils displaying the API Certification Mark Starburst and the API Service Symbol Donut with the API Service SM.
